Association formed to bolster safety
Under the auspices of the Ministry of Manpower, the commercial diving industry has come together to set up the Commecial Diving Association (Singapore).
Singapore Safety Standards
Central to our mission in the Commercial Diving Association (Singapore) is to uphold safety standards for the industry and to champion best practices in safety. The Association does not work in isolation but under the authority and auspices of the Singapore Ministry of Manpower and the Workplace Health & Safety Act 2006.
Under this legislation is the Approved Code of Practice for that looks at the Act in relation to industry and each activity in the industry.
In relation to commercial diving, this approved code of practice is contained within SS511; for Singapore Standards. These are nationally recognised documents established by consensus. They are functional or technical requirements in the form of specifications for materials, product system or process, codes of practice, methods of test, terminologies, guides etc.
There are also Technical References or TR for short, which are fast track documents developed to help meet urgent industry demand for specifications or requirements on a particular product, process or service in an area where there is an absence of reference standards. Unlike Singapore Standards, TRs are issued without going through the full consensus process as the time taken could affect the relevance to market needs. As such, they are made available for provisional application over a period of two years, but does not have the status of Singapore Standards. The aim is to use the experience gained to modify the TRs before they can be adopted as Singapore Standards.
